Gooseneck Floor Lamp: Obviously they make great floor lamps.  Just be sure that the base is heavy enough to allow you to stretch the neck of the lamp as far as you need to, and all should be well.  The best place to situate a lamp, believe it or not, if you are actually using it to light up your work, book or craftwork and not just to provide additional soft, or otherwise, lighting in your room, is directly behind your chair or couch. That way, the light shines from behind, over your shoulder (right or left, you can position the lamp as you desire) giving you optimum lighting.  You can also use gooseneck floor lamps to shine on something specifically in your room that you want to highlight, such as a feature shelf or a painting.  Frequently these types of lamps are made from brass or frosted glass, and you can also buy them with a couple of shades or bulbs on the one extension. Truly versatile!

Desk Lamp: It goes without saying that the gooseneck desk lamp is probably the most common desk lamp of all. Why? Because they work so well! You can position them wherever you like, and wherever you have space, on your desk and then use the gooseneck to stretch or twist to highlight exactly what you are working on at the time.

For Reading: Yes, the gooseneck lamp is the best lamp to use while reading.  Table lamps look great, especially if the shade has designs on it, but they are not very good when it comes to directing light to the written page. The gooseneck lamp, on the other hand, can reach right over and shine on whatever it is you are holding in your hand–a book, knitting or sewing, or any other craft material.

Piano Lamp: The gooseneck lamp wins hands down again for illuminating keys and music.  Most of the piano lamps you see are in fact this type of lamp. They are great, when you are trying to create a specific mood or atmosphere, as they can reach over and highlight the sheets of music and keys without illuminating the rest of the room.

Portable Gooseneck floor lamp for those confined to bed or wheelchair: A portable gooseneck floor lamp is great if you are caring for an elderly person, or someone who is sick or confined to the house.  You can simply move it back and forth from bed to wheelchair. That way, there is always steady lighting available.

Bedside Lamp: The highly flexible goosenecks are great for making sure that you have adequate light in the bedroom, should you wish to read at night before sleeping. You can position it so that it does not shine on or disturb your partner either, if they tend to go to sleep before you do at night.

Studio Lamp: You will often see this type of lamp used in studios, during photo shoots. If any area needs more light, or needs highlighting, the flexible neck makes it very easy to correctly position the light, in seconds. It can also shine from behind the photographer, over his head, to provide more soft light at the front of the picture area. They are also great to use for outdoor photography as well, as they give much more focused light than regular outdoor lighting, such as the outdoor pendant.

Drawing, Sketching and Painting: Gooseneck art lamps are great, as you can direct the light and highlight specific areas of the model, or whatever it is you are sketching.  Light is very important when it comes to art, and being able to manipulate it via using a gooseneck lamp is very convenient.

Outdoor Lighting: You can even use these lamps, either floor standing or even desk lamp (they can sit on tables) for any temporary outdoor lighting needs you may have, such as outdoor holiday lighting.   If you only need them temporarily, they can be moved in and out at will, giving you suitable lighting when needed outdoors.

Fighting Fleas: I really could not resist including this use, although it is not one that I would have thought of on my own. Still, it does make sense when you think about it!  For those of you who prefer evasive techniques of getting rid of fleas rather than outright confrontation, you can try to put a basin of water on the floor with some dishwashing detergent in it.  Apparently, if you place a small gooseneck lamp in the basin and leave it on over night, it will attract the fleas who will then become trapped in the detergent and soon come to an end.  I am not one hundred percent sure how wise it is to immerse the base of a gooseneck lamp in water, it would seem a tad dangerous to me.  Perhaps you stand the light on something, such as a brick or a plastic box, that is placed in the center of a basin of liquid.

Some designs that may turn heads include the Adesso lamps.  Adesso itself, as a company, seeks to offer buyers high-end, good quality home décor items at affordable prices. Their designs really are very chic, modern and some are almost futuristic, and they look great in homes and on desks. For example their extended neck gooseneck desk lamp with its LED long-life bulb. It is made from satin steel material, thus it not only looks great and feels good, but it is extremely useful as the light can reach far via the extending gooseneck.

Another interesting modern designed lamp is the Eternity double gooseneck adjustable lamp–again, specifically a desk lamp. The left gooseneck reaches across the desk for 20 inches, whereas the right gooseneck reaches slightly less distance, 17 inches. The lamp is not cheap, it sells for around $100, but the versatility of being able to illuminate two separate areas of a desk at the same time, has a lot of potential especially for those who work from several difference sources at the same time.

Finally, one other extremely interesting lamp I saw recently for sale on Amazon, is a gooseneck floor lamp with five ‘heads’, ranging from white to pink in graded shading. At only $20, this unique styled Adesso floor lamp would definitely be an attention getter if you were to showcase it in your living room or bedroom.  It is very easy to setup, and while it may not give enough light for the entire room, it is great for giving off soft lighting, and you can have it positioned so that one of the lights shines down on where you are sitting so that you can read by it, for example.

When it comes to designer lamps, however, or even a specific style of gooseneck floor lamps, you may find it easier to search online and see what styles are available.

One of the first places to search would be on Amazon. Currently they have a great selection of gooseneck lamps for sale. If you search their “Tools and Home Improvement” you will find almost 300 different lamps available, in all shapes, sizes, colors and designs. Prices start of at around $10 or a little more, for a standard desk lamp. One interesting style of lamp currently selling is the “Cordless Anywhere Reading Lamp”.  As you will note from the item name, it is a cordless gooseneck floor lamp that is lightweight enough you can move it around at will. Unfortunately, from reviews shared, it seems that while it is very mobile, the light it gives off is not really that great to read under unless it is shining directly on the text you are reading. This may not always be practical, however.  On the plus side, it is a great lamp to use when the electricity is out–you will still be able to read even at night, with or without electricity. It is also handy in that you can take it anywhere with you, and read. You could even take it outside at night and read if you so desired, as it is entirely battery operated.

On the high end of the spectrum, an Edward Alden gooseneck desk lamp could set you back a tidy $479!  Less expensive designer lamps are also available for around $200.  A very nice Tiffany gooseneck table lamp is only $207 and it really would be a fantastic addition to any room. It is their ‘rosebush’ lamp, and the base and gooseneck is designed to closely resemble a rose branch, with the lampshade decorated with a floral design.

As you can see, there is a huge variety of different gooseneck lamp options when it comes to buying online, with prices ranging from extremely cheap to ridiculously expensive.  One thing when buying a lamp online, is that you do need to factor in that the more fragile lamps can sometimes become damaged during transit. There are many different styles when it comes to the gooseneck desk lamp, ranging from the very inexpensive standard gooseneck lamp, to the expensive designer lamp. One of the more common desk lamps is the student lamp. These are commonly all metal, with the same colored stand and metal shade, often they are black, gray, dark blue or red. If pastel colors are your thing, you can easily find lamps with pink or baby blue shades.

I have seen desk lamps for sale that have a clock built into the base, and another style of lamp that has a built-in MP3 player.  Naturally, these more individualized desk lamps cost slightly more than the regular student desk lamps, depending on the features that they include, but they are usually less expensive than a gooseneck floor lamp.

A standard student style gooseneck desk lamp usually costs somewhere around $25.  If you are going for a more stylish lamp, suitable for an executive desk for example, then you may be looking at outlaying anything from $50 up.  Taking it a step further, the antique style brass gooseneck lamps will set you back over $100, depending on the actual design. Usually, lamps with added features such as a clock, an MP3 player or USB and Ethernet ports cost from $50 up, depending on the features and the quality of the included accessory.

The great thing about these types of lamps is that they are very easy to place so that they shed optimum light on your page. Normally, you would place them to either side of your workspace, depending on whether you are right handed or left handed. If you are using a computer or a laptop, you can adjust them so that they shine directly over the top of your monitor, or you can place them to either side if you are reading off or writing notes onto paper. That’s what makes them the desk lamp of choice for most people–their versatility and the ability to position them wherever they are most needed at the time. You can even buy clip on gooseneck lamps that you can clip to a shelf above your desk, or even to your monitor or the side of your desk.

There are a couple of safety concerns with the gooseneck desk lamp.  Unless it is a florescent lamp, you may find that the light bulb itself gets very hot. Sears sell very reasonably priced lamps that look great as well.  What you pay will depend on what you are looking for, but it really is not essential to pay top money to get a very sharp, chic looking lamp.  If serviceability is important to you, rather than the latest in style, then you really should not have to pay more than $40 or $50 for a very nice looking floor lamp.

When buying your lamp, pay attention to the overall design of the lamp. As most of these lamps are fairly high–they range anywhere from 45 to 65 inches, you do need to make sure that the base is solid and that it has a large enough circumference to ensure the overall stability of the floor lamp. Before purchasing your lamp, test it out first to make sure that it is solid and that it will not easily tip over.  There are many different styles of shades, so just find something that is compatible with the primary purpose of the lamp. If it is for decoration purposes only, then the actual shape and size of the shade is not as important overall, as if you were using it for doing detailed sewing where you would need to have a strong, bright, focussed light.
