The gooseneck lamp is one of the most versatile lamps currently on the market. Why? Because they are portable, you can move them wherever you need them and you can have them turn to any angle necessary.  Compare that to a stand up lampshade that has a limited circle of light shining out.  Of course, there is a place for lampshades as well, they are great for adding to a room’s overall ambiance and at mood setting. But when it comes to practicality, the gooseneck lamp wins hands down.

Gooseneck lamps are great to use in any room where you will be reading or doing any kind of detail work, such as sketching, sewing, knitting or other craft related tasks. They are especially useful if you have to zoom in on a specific area, as you are able to focus the light very directly on any spot or area where it is needed, simply by pulling the lamp down closer or twisting it to one side or the other.  The beauty of the gooseneck floor lamp is that it can stand directly on the floor, it does not need to be located on a desk or an end table. This means that they are easily positioned anywhere around the room where you have sufficient floor space.

Commonly, you will see gooseneck floor lamps positioned near chairs or couch sets, where they are positioned to shed ample light on the person sitting in the chair or on the couch. It is important to position these lamps properly, so that they do a good job of illuminating the page or whatever you are working on. One ideal location is to position them directly behind your sofa or chair, with the lamp shining over either your left or your right shoulder. This is much better, and preferable to positioning them beside your chair, or using a gooseneck desk lamp in this instance. Again, this is another benefit to using this particular type of floor lamp–they are very easy to position wherever you like them to be.

Most gooseneck floor lamps are very reasonably priced, and you should be able to pick one up for around $30 to $40. If you would prefer a designer style gooseneck lamp, then you will need to expect to pay more. For example, some very sharp looking Adesso designer lamps are over $100. Sears sell very reasonably priced lamps that look great as well.  What you pay will depend on what you are looking for, but it really is not essential to pay top money to get a very sharp, chic looking lamp.  If serviceability is important to you, rather than the latest in style, then you really should not have to pay more than $40 or $50 for a very nice looking floor lamp.

When buying your lamp, pay attention to the overall design of the lamp. As most of these lamps are fairly high–they range anywhere from 45 to 65 inches, you do need to make sure that the base is solid and that it has a large enough circumference to ensure the overall stability of the floor lamp. Before purchasing your lamp, test it out first to make sure that it is solid and that it will not easily tip over.  There are many different styles of shades, so just find something that is compatible with the primary purpose of the lamp. If it is for decoration purposes only, then the actual shape and size of the shade is not as important overall, as if you were using it for doing detailed sewing where you would need to have a strong, bright, focussed light.

Whatever your special needs, you can be sure that you will find a gooseneck lamp that is perfect for your living area, and that will fit in with your overall décor. With such a large choice to choose from you should not have any difficulty at all in finding what you need.
